Samuel Emery Chamberlain was born in Centre Harbour, New Hampshire, on November 27, 1829. He fought with the First United States Dragoons in Mexico in 1846-48. During the Civil War he joined the First Massachusetts Cavalry and rose to brevet brigadier general. In 1865 Chamberlain was appointed assistant quartermaster general of the State of Massachusetts, and placed in charge of the state arsenal. He died November 10, 1908.
